“Fear on the Fraser” was a 2007 series that exposed the threat of floods on the Fraser River. Following its publication, the B.C. government announced a $33-million upgrade to dikes on the river and a total of $100 million over the next 10 years on flood mitigation measures in the province. The series was was honoured with a citation at the Governor-General’s Michener Awards. …

In Richmond, the local government is trying to take responsibility for dike work with a special utility tax that brings in $600,000 each year specifically for dike maintenance.

“I think it’s a reflection of how important the dikes are for us,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie.
