Richmond parents to benefit from new child care spaces

Families in Richmond will have access to more than 400 new licensed child care spaces as part of the Province’s ongoing commitment to increasing access to child care through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

“Creating new child care spaces is one of the ways we are making life better for families in Richmond,” said Henry Yao, MLA for Richmond South Centre, on Thursday. “Through this investment, more parents will be able to go back to work or school, knowing their children are being cared for in a safe and educational environment.” …

“The City of Richmond is committed to being a leader in fostering a comprehensive, high-quality child care system throughout the community and has demonstrated success working with developers to create centres to support this,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “By working with not-for-profit child care operators, developers, the Richmond School District and provincial government, the city has been able to enhance access to child care for families across Richmond, and these new centres are examples of that partnership in action.” …

Delta MLA presses province to move forward on Massey Tunnel replacement

A Liberal MLA is calling on the province to get moving on the Massey Tunnel replacement, saying commuters will be idling in B.C.’s worst traffic bottleneck for years to come because of inaction by the NDP.

Delta South MLA Ian Paton says enough is enough and people who use the Massey Tunnel are running out of patience. …

Both Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie and Delta Mayor George Harvey were hoping a final decision would be made in January, however, there’s been no announcement to date. The public has yet to see the details of the business case, including the costs associated with each option. …

Richmond opens new major arterial road through its city centre

After about two years of construction, the first section of a major north-south arterial road through Richmond City Centre will officially open to traffic this Saturday, March 6.

The newly completed span of River Parkway runs roughly parallel to No. 3 Road between Gilbert Road and Cambie Road, a distance of about one kilometre. This is a two-lane, bidirectional roadway for vehicles, plus pedestrian sidewalks, bike lanes on both sides of the street marked by delineator posts, and LED street lighting.

During today’s press conference, Richmond mayor Malcolm Brodie said this will serve to greatly enhance traffic flow in the city centre, where significant new mixed-use developments are planned now and into the future. …
