Two new car-free transportation options for exploring Richmond

Richmondites and visitors wanting to explore the city will have two new ways to get around the city for free this summer: the Richmond Discovery Shuttle and the Bike Valet at Steveston.

“These two new summertime transportation programs are designed to make it enjoyable, easy and sustainable for both residents and visitors to explore Richmond,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. …

The shuttle runs from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekends and statutory holidays, and it operates on a loop. …

Meanwhile in Steveston, a free Bike Valet service located in the Gulf of Georgia Cannery parking lot will offer free, secure parking for bikes and other non-carbon vehicles, including strollers, skateboards, and scooters. …

Five-lane interchange breaks ground in Richmond

Ground was officially broken Thursday, July 7, 2022, on the new five-lane Steveston interchange in Richmond as part of the project that will see the George Massey Tunnel replaced with a new toll-free crossing.

The new interchange will improve public transit, shorten travel times for drivers, and improve active transportation connections. …

“The Steveston Highway interchange project is an important infrastructure upgrade and a critical component of the overall Highway 99 improvements, which will ultimately improve the lives of those in Richmond and commuters through the corridor,” said Malcolm Brodie, mayor of Richmond. “The Steveston overpass and interchange design, including three extra lanes along with dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths on both sides of the twinning overpass, will improve safety and increase efficiency in moving business and commuter traffic, while reducing congestion and vehicle emissions.” …

Ground broken on five-lane Steveston interchange in Richmond

Hard hats, reflective vests and shovels were in full view on Steveston Highway Thursday morning to mark the official construction of the new five-lane Steveston interchange – part of the George Massey Tunnel replacement project.

Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming was joined by Wayne Sparrow, elected Chief of Musqueam Indian Band, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, as well as councillors and MLAs at the $85-million site, at Steveston Highway and Highway 99. …

This project is not only an important upgrade for the city, but also a “critical component for the overall Highway 99 improvement,” according to Brodie.

He noted that the former BC Liberal government’s old plan to build a 10-lane bridge “was unacceptable in so many ways,” including being as high as an apartment complex.

“I am very, very grateful to the Government of British Columbia for sitting down with us … to say that what we want is something more in keeping with the environmental issues, the agricultural issues, the urban issues that we have faced,” said Brodie. …
