This community was just named the most active in all of BC

Daily Hive

A Metro Vancouver city just beat out all other communities in the province to be crowned the most active place in all of BC.

Richmond, just south of Vancouver, received the nod from Participaction, a national organization focused on promoting physical activity. And it’s not the first time Richmond has won, either.

“Our ongoing commitment to providing safe, fun and accessible recreational opportunities for all ages is reflected in the level of enthusiasm and participation,” Mayor Malcolm Brodie said in a news release this week. “Initiatives such as free or low-cost events, fee subsidies and ongoing promotion of the benefits of physical activity all inspire our residents to remain active, connected and healthy.” …

It’s official — Richmond has regained its title as B.C.’s most active community.

The 2024 ParticipACTION Community Challenge, organized by Novo Nordisk to get community members moving, saw Richmondites participate in 542 activities throughout the month of June.

Almost 630 individuals pledged to get active and approximately 258,000 participants took part in events and activities throughout the month, according to the City of Richmond’s media release.

The city will receive $15,000 in addition to the title to fund local community initiatives for physical activities.

Richmond stood out among B.C. communities for several reasons, according to Novo Nordisk’s media release issued July 23.

The city had partnered with the Richmond Chamber of Commerce to mobilize the business community during Seniors Week, GoByBike Week and Recreation and Parks Month, explained Novo Nordisk. It also highlighted the warm-up walk and dance party led by Mayor Malcolm Brodie and the free and low-cost programs offered in June. …

Water has flowed from Vancouver taps for 100 years. What about the next century?

Vancouver Sun

The system that brings clean water into Metro Vancouver homes was started 100 years ago, with rickety pipes on the Burrard Inlet seabed that delivered about 140 million litres a day to the 260,000 people living in Vancouver and Burnaby.

A century later, the Capilano and Seymour rivers have been dammed and a lake has been added to the network to provide Metro’s 2.8 million people with an average of one billion litres of water a day — enough to fill B.C. Place Stadium. …

Malcolm Brodie, chair of Metro Vancouver’s water committee, agreed it is crucial to ensure “we’re using treated drinking water responsibly” as the region grows and climate change worsens.

“The actions we take now will make a huge difference for the future.” …

Stratification allowed for single-family lots in Richmond

Richmond News

Richmond city council will allow single-family lots in Richmond to be stratified into three or four units, depending on the size of the lot.

Some lots close to transit will even allow six stratified units.

This decision follows provincial legislation requiring municipalities to change their bylaws to allow densification in single-family neighbourhoods – affecting about 25,000 properties in Richmond.

But the vote at city council was not unanimous.

In fact, Coun. Carol Day suggested partial stratification – two stratified units where three housing units are permitted and three stratified units where four are permitted – to encourage some rental units to be built.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie was in favour of Day’s motion, saying feedback from builders indicate they probably wouldn’t build more than two or three units on single-family lots.

“I worry if we go with 100 per cent strata, there’s no going back,” Brodie said.

The amendment, however, was defeated with only Couns. Day, Michael Wolfe, Laura Gillanders and the mayor voting for it. …
