An estimated 500 residents and business owners attended a rally this past weekend to speak out against a proposed six-storey, 90-unit supportive housing development in Richmond.
Opponents expressed a number of concerns, including fears that the development at Cambie and Sexsmith roads will house residents with complex mental health and addiction issues without providing adequate support, and that it could make the neighbourhood less safe for families and nearby businesses. …
Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie did not attend the rally, but told Postmedia he recognizes that there have been neighbourhood impacts around the temporary modular housing sites.
Brodie said city council has consulted extensively with neighbours through a working committee and has been “listening very carefully.”
According to the 2023 Metro Vancouver Homeless Count, approximately 162 individuals are without housing in Richmond. Brodie said the city is fully committed to addressing homelessness and helping individuals who are struggling to stay off the streets. …
